The galaxy far, far away enthusiasts are hardly bereft of titles when it comes to excellent video games featuring the iconic energy blades, but the universe imagined by George Lucas is not just a battleground for combat. Not many franchises have understood this as well as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was crafted in the classic computer role-playing game vein that made companies like Obsidian and BioWare famous. Now, after several delays and setbacks, a major gaming showcase has announced that the community will soon be able to experience a spiritual follow-up to the beloved franchise. It's called Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is described as "a new single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual heir to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic." Veteran developer Casey Hudson, formerly of BioWare and the creative lead of the original KOTOR, is leading it at Arcanaut Studios.
“When we developed the original KOTOR, we wanted to forge a definitive Star Wars experience — shaping an adventure that was made of all the things we hoped to doing as Star Wars fans,” Hudson explained. “Now, 25 years after we first conceived that game, our goals are just as ambitious. Fate of the Old Republic represents an chance to investigate a contemporary vision of a quintessential Star Wars experience, using cutting-edge technology and game design, and an all-new story written specifically to realize the blend of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the center of KOTOR.”
The reveal is something of a surprise, given that 2022 saw a recent try at an Old Republic game get shelved. However, rumors had suggested that a revival of KotOR, as well as one of its follow-up, had been in the works up until March 2025.
Here is the official description for the new title:
Developed by Arcanaut Studios in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a new single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Led by Casey Hudson, Game director of the original Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, the team of veteran game developers and storytellers at Arcanaut Studios is crafting an epic interactive adventure across a galaxy on the brink of rebirth where every decision shapes your path towards light or darkness. Fate is in your hands.
The venerated role-playing games, which have seen recent ports to platforms like the Switch, are renowned for their narrative-focused, decision-based, and RPG-stat-heavy approach to Star Wars. The games were seminal enough that they accidentally defined how people visualize the Old Republic age as a whole, still today. The games bravely chose to question many beliefs of Jedi lore that are often considered inarguable, like whether the group and its understanding of the Force are true. The second game, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, took things in a far more grim direction by asking if the world might not be better off without the Jedi at all. Both games are revered by fans decades after their release, but the second installment in particular is argued to be as one of the greatest pieces of Star Wars media in existence.
And now, several years after getting a cinematic trailer for a Knights of the Old Republic remake, we're finally getting another game in the similar spirit. Given the appetite for rich games like Baldur's Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin, a fresh interpretation on Knights of the Old Republic that's developed with care has the chance to be wildly successful.
