The Olympic and Paralympic teams must adopt AI and encourage greater teamwork to maintain their recent elite results, according to the nation's elite sport agency leader Nick Webborn.
"Our nation has been an exceptionally successful nation, and to keep that position or to even go higher, we're going to have to operate in new ways," Webborn remarked.
Webborn stressed the importance to "think smarter" and "leverage technologies such as AI appropriately in sport," as well as improving partnerships among different sports bodies.
The chairman's vision goes beyond podium ambitions. He highlighted several crucial areas where AI could provide major benefits:
This comes after a previous declaration that British athletes would be given AI-based safeguards against online abuse.
Although Team GB secured 65 podium finishes at the Paris 2024 Olympics, equalling their London 2012 haul, their first-place count of 14 saw them drop to seventh in the final table.
"We want to keep exceeding expectations," said Webborn. "It's those little details, how we turn those silvers into gold."
Webborn additionally commended the ParalympicsGB team, which has repeatedly placed second after China, while observing that international rivals are improving rapidly.
During his initial interview after taking up the position, Webborn put great importance on athlete welfare and life after sport.
"Supporting the athletes who enter our elite program... getting them ready for their later life, so that the abilities they acquire make them a better individual... remains extremely important to me," Webborn stated.
Webborn suggested that a caring system doesn't just creates superior athletes but also more resilient individuals for the future.
Looking ahead, UK Sport is focused on bringing world-class events to Britain. Scheduled events feature the 2026 European Athletics Championships and the 2028 football Euros.
Webborn also voiced a future "aspiration" to stage the Olympic and Paralympic Games again, potentially around 2040.
"Wasn't that brilliant in 2012? I'd like for more members of the public to experience those memories too," Webborn said.
Webborn proposed that a potential bid could be innovative, maybe featuring multiple host cities such as Liverpool and Manchester working together.
