It might not have been at the equivalent scale as sparing holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own Donald Trump moment this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the commencement of a current administration.
“Except perhaps for eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life away from worry.”
The gathering, either celebrating or rejecting the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, provided by a first responder, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people shouting “6-7” – originating from a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently named “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to kick off the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: happy, diverse, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Each year, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
