Alright, how was this year in your household? Was it all as good as people post on Facebook? Packed with A-grades for your offspring and elaborate dress-up celebrations for the adults? Or perhaps it was a sea of disappointment with only occasional fun highlights? And was any of it authentic, or are we all seven-fingered AI slop beings with unrealistic smiles?
I've assembled the family for a chat, willing or unwilling, to discuss the crucial thing in any given year: which releases we enjoyed the most. So here goes:
Just Dance 2024
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"You can't expect my personal ranking."
Meanwhile, on mobile, her go-to has been Cityscapes and "searching for reasonable healthcare."
"Digitally?"
"In reality."
Overwatch
"I have no interest in games on my phone." He was offended that the question was posed. Fair enough.
Resident Evil Biohazard
She's attempting to get into acting, but when she stepped away from the mic, she was playing Resident Evil. She also elaborated in great detail about her successes on The Sims, where her avatar has a thriving utopia with significantly better healthcare than her older sibling has outside the game.
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at sixty percent completion and finished the year at eighty-two percent. She's in it for the long run not a sprint for her. Her phone game: something called Woodle, where you have to unscrew pins.
Minecraft
Every time I see my 21-year-old son playing Minecraft, I give him a hard time like a cross between a persistent critic. When he protests, I reply that I am behaving this way to toughen him up so he can be a man and play games for grownups. It's a classic Scottish father/son relationship.
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
She was the clear winner for this one. She is incredible. Superior than I was at my peak gaming days in my prime.
Marvel Snap
It was in a league of its own to the hours I spent on this exceptionally well-crafted deck building competitive game, with its regularly updated range of cards and game variations.
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that frequently update their range is you eventually realize and realise it is all just an attempt to suck you into fomo-fuelled microtransactions. So enjoyment soured halfway through the year and it was deleted.
Doom: The Dark Ages
Stunning reinvention of a legendary franchise. Captivating atmosphere from the beginning. I wish I could deal with my problems so effectively in real life.
Blue Prince
I decline to rush this stunning, original game and I just lacked the focused attention to give it what it needed earlier this year. With holiday guests over the festive period, I plan to dive into this in the early morning after family time.
Balatro
I know Balatro was last year's surprise hit, but I was late to it. And it is exceptional. It just gets each element right. The core concept is a brilliant concept, but the abilities behind the different joker cards are so creative it has become a game I could play any time. Throw in the cleverness of the card design, and this is an true peak of gaming. I dream of being stuck in a elevator for hours just so I have the perfect excuse but play it.
Outer Worlds 2
I received a bit of backlash when I critiqued how a technical issue in another game damaged the experience for me, but that other title is still a massive gaming achievement in terms of production values – which I valued even more after experiencing Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the reader who took the time to contact me to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "missing the point". I mention that as written, because I acknowledge the engagement, and he is obviously an sharp judge of character.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Sure. Give me a punishingly tough non-linear thing and leave me without guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "look around". How delightful. I acknowledge that it looks ace and is perfection if you are into the genre, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I am less interested in in my adulthood. I was around back when all games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was okay when I was a kid, but so was many outdated things.
Toss-up between business deals that raised eyebrows, and expensive game releases. Both morally indefensible and repugnant.
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all sound good names called from the back door at tea time.
Right Thumb Joint. Seriously. I don’t know if it’s because of button mashing or endless scrolling, but it is sore like the mines of sulphur in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs insured back in the day.
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to make 2026 last until the heat death of the universe.
The Witcher 4.
