Out of all the mature animated films I’ve personally viewed, no other has stuck with me quite like the terror-laced finale of a viscerally violent and deeply subversive film from 2022 Unicorn Wars.
In 2015’s, the Spanish filmmaker created a grim, melancholy and frequently brutal world that included several minor , forlorn glimmers of optimism.
Although The Unicorn Wars feels like it originated from an impulse to advance animation even more, the filmmaker clarified that it was rather an attempt to convey a widespread, multicultural theme about “the mutual source of each battle.”
This theme is communicated via a group of brightly hued teddy bears , openly based on a well-known series of cuddly figures.
Maturing in a culture centered on aggression as well as the war machine, a lot of these creatures are obsessed with exterminating the mythical beasts, thanks to a religious scripture that claims the bears they previously were kings of the woods, until the horned beings drove them out.
Some haven’t fully bought into the propaganda, and prefer to try out substances and mate in the woods.
Unlike their friendly equivalents, these vivid animals have visible sexual organs and clear sex drives.
For a certain particularly cruel, cynical bear, Bluey, the war against unicorns becomes a path to power — and specifically to supremacy over his softer, kinder brother the character Tubby.
This bear acts as a tormentor and an obvious psychopath , and while terror overcomes his group and takes his fellow soldiers one by one, he seizes more and more power personally, through ever more gory, damaging approaches.
Meanwhile, the horned creatures are suffering their own nightmare, through an expanding, destructive monster in their forest.
“In the early stages, it appears as a humorous movie,” the filmmaker commented. “Yet it evolves into a more serious and melancholic film. And by the end, it’s a scary feature.”
Unicorn Wars begins resembling one of the most whimsical movies by a renowned animator, that discover a wicked pleasure in letting drawn beings swear, engage in violence, or sex each other up.
Subsequently it turns into something more like a bleaker movie from that creator, featuring progressively visual gore and a tangible relation to genuine tragedy of war.
In the finale, it is an outright Grand Guignol massacre.
The fear that makes this a perfect Halloween viewing kicks in much sooner than that description suggests.
The Unicorn Wars is one for the devoted lovers of violence, for fans of extreme cinema who desire to see a film they have not viewed until now, and who can handle a narrative that pulls absolutely no punches.
Watch it in a dimly lit space with no disturbances, and that ending will burrow into your mind and linger.
