This production, though, could coincide too neatly with the carefully constructed image promoted by official channels that, within Russia, it reads as a compliment instead of a critique.

Over a long period, the Russian political apparatus and its pop-culture machine have collaborated to forge a tailor-made persona of Putin. This figure is an infallible strategist devoid of flaws, an ex-intelligence officer reframed as a local 007 who consistently understands beyond what he shows.

A notable instance is a TV series launched last fall, directed by a Kremlin supporter. The protagonist is a fictional blue-eyed lieutenant colonel selected by fate to “save” Russia from chaos. While he is called Mikhail, the message is unmistakable: the savior must be a familiar security officer.

International depictions frequently result in buttressing this same narrative rather than debunking it. An adaptation based on a popular book aims to undermine the Putin cult by framing him not as a cause but as a symptom, shifting the focus to the political machinery surrounding him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

In the film, Putin is shown as having been picked by powerful oligarchs to steady the nation because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to become president. He replies is that he would prefer to rule from the shadows, desiring enduring influence.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the cool, reluctant strategist shaped by destiny. Historically, none of this took place.

The Truth Behind the Selection

No one ever begged Putin to accept the role. The presidency was in essence a selection process with many contenders. Central to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the previous administration who expected to run the state de facto.

Given the casting, an actor popular with Russian audiences, the authorities are likely to seize the chance to portray this choice as a small victory. The film's exclusion of mass protests, the opposition, or prominent activists from its narrative, even though it includes the past decade, is a pleasant bonus for official messaging.

In Russian cinema, Putin is frequently an all-powerful presence who remains unseen on screen. He is signaled through photographs or orders from on high. Now, he finally acquires a recognizable face—one that may inadvertently echo the exact legends it perhaps aims to examine.
