Meteorologists have indicated a chilly start to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated across much of the UK. Celebrants are advised to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay celebrations are expected to take place, a contrast to last year's postponement. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be necessary," stated the national forecaster.
Across the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks displays, with dry conditions and clear skies. Readings are forecast to be chilly, so warm wraps a necessity, as per forecasters.
Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Moving into Friday, advisories have been issued across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.
With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
In addition, amber-level health advisories have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities explained this signified the weather could to cause significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This involves a likely increase in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.
The advice for all is clear: to see the new year in good health, preparing for winter conditions is absolutely essential.
