Israelis have assembled around the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-initiated offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the hostilities in Gaza.
The assault led to over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most fatal day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other global organizations.
"Our aggressive enemies have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister stated on that day.
He also pledged to "achieve all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer present a threat to Israel".
The national leadership postponed formal commemorations until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still took place throughout the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the families of people who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was conducted in Tel Aviv. Organized by the families themselves, it was broadcast on Israeli television channels.
Hours earlier, a silent tribute was observed throughout the country.
At the same time, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams met in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to discuss the provisions of the plan.
A high-ranking representative involved in the negotiations revealed that an late session of negotiations started at evening in Egypt.
The source said the morning session finished without concrete outcomes, due to disagreements over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not resume combat after the first phase of the arrangement.
He noted that the talks are "challenging and have not yet achieve any real breakthrough," but noted that facilitators are making efforts to close the differences between the both parties.
In the city's memorial area that day, young a woman - whose sibling survived the attack on the gathering, where hundreds were lost their lives and dozens more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No place seems like home any longer and until each abducted person return none of us will feel safe."
"When we see all home once more, we can relax again. Then we can start to heal," she concluded.
Outside the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their backing for the loved ones of the captives. Israel reports forty-eight stay in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be alive.
Demonstrator a participant explained: "It's necessary do any agreement required for the abducted to come back home. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now consistently show that about seventy percent of the population want the conflict to conclude in return for the freedom of the hostages.
At the area of the gathering, grieving people came together to pay their respects.
From there, the boom of military attacks and artillery could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the severe Israeli attacks continued.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the western district, Rimal and zone districts and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.
"As the dusk falls, the fear appears with it," relocated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli bombing earlier, explained.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, holding each other, particularly my smallest child who rests his head on me throughout the night."
"Every second we look at the reports to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be achieved and that the fighting will return to us."
The medical facility in Gaza City reported it had taken in the remains of six people by the daytime, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of that area said another two dead people had been delivered. A person was lost his life by Israeli forces while seeking assistance to the south, health workers said.
