Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 lives were killed and in excess of 40 were wounded when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local police are describing as a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to the hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting officially identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the individuals who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the events before the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, a senior official declared that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain under care, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
