No professional sports organization markets parity as effectively as the NFL: it's their core marketing message. However, after ten games of this season, this isn’t a league that is equally balanced separating contenders, pretenders, and middle-of-the-pack clubs. It’s one where the majority of teams appear to be sufficient.
Looking at the NFC side, for the most part, the picture becomes more distinct. The Rams along with the Seahawks (both standing at seven wins, two losses) seem like the most balanced franchises in the NFL, and secured overwhelming triumphs on Sunday. Philadelphia at 6-2 even with their challenges maintain among the most gifted lineups across the NFL, similar to Green Bay (5-2-1). Even the Lions (six and three), who have been inconsistent on offense and defense and have been dealing with internal staff conflicts, have demonstrated they're capable of dominating good teams. For each of these squads, you can still easily construct a championship trajectory.
Turning to the American Football Conference, postseason landscape is a jumbled mess. Your four division leaders after ten games: Indianapolis, New England, Denver (all standing at eight wins) and the Steelers (5-4). Take another look. Not the Chiefs. Not the Bills. Neither Ravens nor Bengals. The traditional powers, featuring elite NFL signal-callers, possess either glaring roster weaknesses or have suffered medical setbacks.
From certain perspectives, it’s the league’s ideal. Yet observing this year’s four division leaders in the AFC still feels strange. Areas of each team pass the championship smell test, yet not completely. Were you questioned to commit to your conference championship predictions right now, would you comfortably pick any of the current division frontrunners?
First, examining Indianapolis, Daniel Jones hasn’t quite reached complete disaster level. However, recent performances have caused alarm. He has returned to turning over the ball and struggling against pressure. He was sacked seven times against the Falcons on Sunday, and experienced a short sequence during which he tossed an interception and fumbled three times. This is a week after he turned the ball over five times versus Pittsburgh.
The Colts attack excelled during early games since Jones evaded game-changing errors. The running back and protection unit ensure Indianapolis remains capable of overcoming occasional setbacks, as demonstrated overseas. But Jones returning to his old blunder-prone days would end any playoff run.
The Patriots seem relatively comparable. Last season, they were considered jokes. Currently, they represent football's most unexpected success and the strongest squad across the league post seven wins in a row. If not for committing turnover errors a contest they should have won versus the Steelers, they’d be sitting a 9-1 record with the top standing. Previously, they were old and slow. Today they appear youthful, quick and confident. However, we must acknowledge the weakness of New England's opponents. They've encountered the most manageable schedule across the NFL, and there have still been cracks. The signal-caller has taken sacks 35 times – among the highest totals – with several hits he endured during the game were vicious. As the season progresses, those beatings accumulate.
Denver stands at also 8-2, yet it seems like they're nervously waiting. Bo Nix has shown inconsistency, with the attack struggling, while the defensive unit provides most of the responsibility. Without serviceable quarterback play, the Broncos aren’t scaring anyone in the postseason. The Chargers are also contending in the Western division at 7-2, but the injuries affecting their protection unit will create difficulties for extended playoff success.
Meanwhile, Pittsburgh exists, somehow still leading their division despite being thumped a decisive loss to Los Angeles during prime time. They've been outscored overall, their defense regularly vanishes, and the QB's current constraints during his career phase continue to show up. At 5-4, they're barely clinging, but Baltimore, with their QB returning to health and facing easier opponents, have won three consecutive. This development isn't entirely shocking that the Ravens have pulled within a game of the Steelers, though the speed of this shift is an indictment of the Steelers' uneven performances. The fact Baltimore began the season 1-5 and currently seem capable of division victory reveals much about the conference as a whole.
Baltimore constitutes part within a trio of powerhouses – together with Bills and Chiefs – powered by their MVP quarterbacks, that would continue to generate the highest anxiety for opponents should they reach postseason. They represent undesirable playoff matchups, however, both franchises cannot get out of their own way.
Previously, the Bills felt confident following victory over Kansas City. This weekend they encountered one of the most disappointing losses this year. They didn't merely fall against Miami; they looked terrible, dropping a 30-13 road game. It was Miami’s first win versus Buffalo in more than 1,000 days.
