Food Benefits Expected to End for Tens of Millions Throughout Prolonged Federal Shutdown

The United States Department of Agriculture stated recently that nutrition assistance payments under one of the country’s largest social assistance programs will not be distributed in November due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.

Impasse Persists For Nearly Four Weeks

The government shutdown lasted three and a half weeks when the announcement was made, which followed demands from hundreds of Congressional Democrats urging the department to utilize reserve accounts to cover November's food assistance.

“Bottom line, resources are exhausted,” the department confirmed. “Currently, assistance will not be provided” beginning in November.

National Consequences

Over 40 million Americans rely on the regular assistance, per official statistics. Some regions, like New Mexico, dependence on this assistance affects a significant portion of citizens.

Internal communications seen by a major news agency showed that federal authorities chose not to tap contingency funding for the upcoming payments.

Political Stalemate

Republicans and Democrats are still at odds regarding how to fund and reopen the federal government.

Remarks from the director at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities noted that federal leadership had chances to prepare in advance to prevent benefits from running out.

“Officials were able and expected to taken steps before now to get ready to access these resources,” the comments added. “Conversely, officials could opt out in an effort to gain political advantage” while GOP lawmakers attempt to influence Democratic senators to support a funding package that would reopen federal functions.

Emergency Measures

Executives in two affected states issued emergency declarations in recent days to make money available for hunger relief expecting SNAP benefits not being issued during the upcoming period.
