A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also included well-known figures.
The mission was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a public message, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.
She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
The researcher, who has focused her career on women's health research and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her roots – was overshadowed under the deluge of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Months following reaching space, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she wrote.
She added that even with the backlash, important benefits had resulted from the experience, including elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.
The computer-piloted spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the edge of space.
The team of pioneers also included leaders in multiple disciplines.
The venture behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a well-known tech mogul.
