Countless Come to Initial Israeli Memorial Service Since Captive Remains Were Repatriated

As Michel Illouz slowly made his way through the masses beneath the tall evergreens and date palms at the burial ground in Ra'anana, a city located about 21 km north of Tel Aviv, he expressed gratitude to as many attendees as feasible.

Earlier he provided an open call to the local community to join his family in mourning his twenty-six-year-old son, Guy, whose body had been repatriated from Gaza on Monday.

Overwhelming Response

Thousands responded the invitation. They filled the roads, processed behind the coffin transport carrying his body, and gathered at the cemetery in such substantial amounts that the original plan to conduct the service indoors had to be canceled.

Rather, the gathering was held outdoors, accompanied by the melody of singing birds.

Notable Occasion

This marked the initial burial ceremony since the final two dozen captives were released from Gaza, along with several deceased individuals. A further 21 of the dead prisoners remain missing, but at least this household now had a designated location to express sorrow and remember their son, as stated by companions.

Heartbreaking Narrative

Guy Illouz, a performer and audio engineer, had been shot in the back at the Nova musical gathering during the Hamas assault on October 7, 2023. Prior to the incident, he had reached out to his father from a concealed location to tell him he cared; to bid farewell. He was captured, and according to those captured simultaneously, he eventually succumbed from his wounds due to medical neglect.

Family Perspective

A trusted companion of the Illouz household, Michelle, aged 50, stated that it had been extremely important to them that the public gathered today. The Illouz relatives, comprising Guy's siblings and brother, had observed shiva, the extended period of mourning, after being informed of his death in December of the previous year. But now that Guy was finally back with them, they desired "caring community again."

"It warms my heart that you attended," expressed Michel. "Your presence is deeply appreciated."

Parent's Homage

He turned to his son. "My dear Guy," he uttered, using a affectionate nickname, "it's hard for me to envision the future without you. They snatched you from me – they ended your life – they stole my being and stole my identity and destroyed my spirit and emotional core."

"I've been left hollow since that meaningless attack by those evil terrorists when they seized you and told you to turn around, and then simply fired two gratuitous rounds into your posterior."

Last Farewell

"Thus I stood this morning, heading toward Abu Kabir medical examiner's office to confirm your identity and say goodbye. They removed the white sheet, and the first thing I saw was that familiar expression, that positive outlook, that serenity and nobility that so characterized you."

"I reached out, tried to sense your aroma, gently felt each part in your body. I observed you, I was by myself with you, and yes, I felt with total assurance that it was you. Yes, I know, Guy-shuk, that you've returned to us. You've rejoined your loved ones' arms, to all your close associates, and to the numerous individuals whose hearts your story impacted."

Familial Courage

During the early part of the service, Illouz had focused entirely on consoling his smaller offspring. He gently touched the locks of his female children, embraced his boy, kissed his neck and maintained composure for them. But then his feelings emerged.

Treasured Recollections

"I will long for so much traveling with you through this land, sensing your presence, enjoying your artistic creations, resting on elevated terrain and activating the stove to prepare the beverage the way only you knew how – 'Dad, do you see the coffee foam? You have to boil it gently, let the bubbles form, then boil it again. Agitate the liquid with rotating movements' – and then your smile while sipping the coffee and your delight in every individual sip."

"Earlier than my exit Abu Kabir today, I kept my promise. I observed you, breathed you in one last time, and yes, I kissed you on the forehead. I was able to see your attractiveness even in the state in which you came back."

Closing Statement

"My Guy-shuk, I adore you completely, I treasure you. I will yearn for you every instant and minute of my time. Find peace, my dear child, relax after a journey of 24 months through worlds unknown to us. I love you, my dear Guy, my treasured initial offspring."
