Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the light-hued ensembles that featured in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
Price's death comes just weeks after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in menswear at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in shaping form-fitting garments made him a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including several ensembles for her American tour following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
The fashion world laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose influence on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
